Winter break is the best two weeks of the application year

Winter break lands right before the second-heaviest deadline stretch of the year. January and February bring Dell Scholars, Horatio Alger, most state grant deadlines, and a large share of local community awards.

Two focused days over break can produce a finished essay, a completed FAFSA, and three submitted applications — roughly what would otherwise take a month of exhausted weeknights.

Set a specific number rather than a vague intention. 'Submit four applications before school starts' works considerably better than 'work on scholarships over break.'
