September is four weeks out

Coca-Cola Scholars, QuestBridge, and the Gates Scholarship all close in September, and every one of them needs essays and recommendations that take weeks to assemble properly. Four weeks sounds like room. It isn't, because most of that time belongs to other people.

Start with recommendation letters, because they are the only part of the application you cannot do yourself at 11pm the night before. A teacher who agrees today still needs two to three weeks to write something that isn't generic, and they are being asked by six other students in the same window.

When you ask, give them material to work with: the scholarship's name, what it says it's looking for, your deadline, and a short note about what you did in their class that you were actually proud of. Teachers write far better letters when they aren't reconstructing you from memory.

The essays are the second bottleneck. These three programs all want some version of the same thing—evidence that you've done something difficult and stuck with it—but they ask for it in different words and different word counts. Write the long version first and cut down, rather than writing three separate essays from nothing.

Budget a full week for the FAFSA and any financial documents. QuestBridge in particular asks for tax returns and household detail that you probably need a parent or guardian to dig up, and that conversation tends to take several attempts.

Then leave the last four days empty on purpose. Portals crash, uploads reject file types, and recommenders submit late. Every year students lose applications they had genuinely finished because they left zero slack between 'done' and 'due'.

If you're a rising senior, the next four weeks decide whether these three are realistic options or ones you read about after they closed. Request your recommendation letters this week. Everything else on the list can be compressed; that one can't.
