Local scholarships are where the odds are

Expected value is a useful lens for scholarships. A $50,000 national award with 50,000 applicants has an expected value of about a dollar per application. A $1,000 local award with 12 applicants has an expected value of over $80.

That math is why local awards deserve most of your effort even though they're less exciting. Community foundations, credit unions, rotary clubs, employers, and school districts all run them.

The reason students skip them is that they're hard to find — they're rarely online and often only announced through a counselor's office. Which is exactly why the applicant pools stay small.
