How to actually use a scholarship search site

Search sites return thousands of results by default, which is functionally the same as returning none. The value is entirely in narrowing, and most students never touch a single filter.

Start with the two filters that eliminate the most: your grade level and your state. Grade level alone removes most of a typical database, because a large share of listings are for current college students, graduate students, or specific incoming classes. State removes most of the rest, since local and regional awards vastly outnumber national ones.

That combination usually takes a list of thousands down to something you can actually read. What's left is the only list that was ever real for you.

Now sort by deadline rather than by award amount. Sorting by amount is the instinct, and it's the wrong one—it puts the $50,000 national awards with 30,000 applicants at the top and buries the $1,000 local award with forty. Deadline order tells you what to do this week, which is the only question that matters.

Read eligibility before you read the description. Descriptions are marketing; eligibility is the actual rule. Students routinely spend an evening on an essay for an award that required a major they don't have or a county they don't live in.

Be honest about the ones that say 'preference given to.' That isn't a hard requirement, but it does mean you're competing against people who match it exactly. Apply anyway if the essay is short—just don't let it displace one where you match cleanly.

Finally, save everything you're plausibly eligible for on the first pass instead of deciding immediately. Judging each listing on the spot is exhausting and you'll quit halfway. Collect first, filter second, apply third—the three steps go much faster when you stop mixing them together.
