Beyond YC: three founder programs with real prestige

September 15, 2026 · 2 min read

Y Combinator gets most of the attention, but a handful of other programs carry comparable weight for young founders.

Y Combinator is the name every aspiring founder knows, but it isn't the only program producing serious startups, and it isn't always the right fit for a student still in high school or early college. A few other names carry comparable prestige and are worth knowing about.

The Thiel Fellowship, founded by Peter Thiel, gives young entrepreneurs $100,000 to skip or pause college and build a company full-time. It's built around the idea that some founders are better served building than sitting in a lecture hall, and alumni include the founders behind Figma and Scale AI.

Techstars runs a global accelerator network offering funding, hands-on mentorship, and access to a large investor network. It has consistently ranked alongside YC in accelerator rankings, and its regional and industry-specific hubs give founders a level of individual attention that's harder to get in a larger cohort.

Draper University, founded by longtime venture capitalist Tim Draper, is an intensive five-week residential program in Silicon Valley. Founders live and work together, and the program culminates in a Demo Day where they pitch directly to a room of active Silicon Valley investors.

None of these require a finished company to apply. What they're looking for, across all three, is evidence that you can build and that you won't stop at the first obstacle.
