The 'why this scholarship' paragraph

Many applications include a short prompt about why you're applying to that specific scholarship. It's the easiest place to gain or lose points, because most applicants write something generic.

Read the sponsoring organization's mission statement and look at previous winners if they're published. Then connect a concrete thing about you to a concrete thing they say they value.

Avoid flattery. 'Your organization has an excellent reputation' says nothing. 'Your focus on first-generation students in trade programs matches the path I'm taking into HVAC certification' says everything.
