January brings Dell Scholars, Horatio Alger, many state grant deadlines, and the beginning of local community foundation cycles — a heavy month that arrives right as school resumes.

Winter break is the natural time to prepare for it, and it's the last stretch of unscheduled time before spring.

Aim for something concrete: FAFSA filed, one essay finished, three applications submitted. Specific targets survive a two-week break; general intentions usually don't.
