September is three weeks away

An annual reminder about the densest deadline month in the scholarship year, and the one that punishes late starts most.

Several of the largest national programs close in September, and they share a structure: essays, recommendations, and financial documentation. None of the three can be produced quickly, and two of them depend on other people.

Recommendation letters are the binding constraint. Three weeks is workable if you ask now and hand over material; it is not workable if you ask in week three. Teachers returning to a new school year are fielding requests from every senior they taught.

Financial documents are the quiet second constraint. Programs asking for tax returns or household income detail require a conversation with a parent or guardian, and those conversations rarely happen on the first attempt.

Write one long base essay rather than three tailored ones. The major September programs all want evidence that you've sustained something difficult; the word counts differ more than the substance does, and cutting down is far faster than starting over.

Reserve the final four days for submission problems rather than writing. Portal failures, rejected file formats, and late recommenders are ordinary, and slack is the only defense against them.

Three weeks is enough time to do this well and not enough to do it twice. Start with the letters today, and let the essays fill the time that's left.
