How committees actually score applications

Larger scholarship programs typically score with a rubric — commonly some mix of academics, leadership or service, the essay, financial need, and fit with the sponsor's mission.

That structure has a practical implication: a spectacular essay can't fully compensate for an empty activity section, because they're scored separately. Balanced applications beat lopsided ones.

It also means the 'fit with mission' category is worth real points and is the easiest to earn. Read what the sponsoring organization says it cares about, and make sure your application visibly reflects it.
